Amateur Photoshoot...

Last summer, I invited a few friends round with the premise that I could take some photos of them and test out my camera and a fairly basic amateur lighting setup.

I'm not a professional photographer, I could barely be considered an amateur, and despite Carl's (the one with the tattoos) great modelling skills, these guys aren't professional models either, haha!

I may try seeing what I can do with them in photoshop (or lightroom - thanks ed) at some point, but for now - back to my dissertation :(

Looks like a lot of fun!

you should look into adobe lightroom

The middle two in black&white are the best imo, the poses in the rest of them feel a little awkward
mostly the guy with the ponytail, lol

nice fisheye

not that bad! don't under value your stuff, sell yourself as amateur at least. :)

Nice stuff though! Not bad at all :)

Zach said...

Definitely not bad, especially for an 'amateur' ;)

All good shots. a3

Nice pics.

I think the black and white really does a great job. If you do end up editing them, I'd make the 4th bunch down from the top black and white.

GameArtifacts said...

the fisheye looks good

Alt Gr said...

They're good, actually

Love that fisheye!
I've got a new DSLR myself and trying to learn the ropes. It's definitely a fun challenge!

you like your fish eye.

Scrogglez said...

really like the pictures, esp the open mouth, looks scary hah

Those are pretty nice. And to be honest, with the accessibility of nice cameras and picture editing programs, to me there isn't much of a difference between a professional photographer and an amatuer.

CandleintheDark said...

These are actually pretty cool!

I really like the slow shutter speed used to capture the "pez". its weird to coz back here in aus theres a relatively well known aussie hip-hop artist called pez!

I think one way to start breaking into the realm of professional photography is to adjust your framing and focusing:

Focus: always on the closer eye (it is the most commonly looked at object in a picture/face.

Framing: Rule of thirds states you should place your subject at the 1/3 or 2/3 line of the frame. You've put it in the center (1/2 line), creating tons of dead space above your subjects.

That's a lot of fisheye pictures. I think the look is overused in modern media. But regardless of that, seeing friends get together and collaborate on something like this is awesome and sounds fun. My friends are all camera shy, so... lol...

cool long exposure shot

Don't sell yourself too short man. I may not know what to look for to consider someone a "professional" over an "amateur" but I do think these are some pretty fantastic pictures. Keep up the good work!

Potholderz said...

Cool, i've always wanted to know how you make those light lines in the Pez one.

gamefreak3335 said...

hmmm not bad looks pretty good to me

thoff74 said...

Fish eye lense is always sweet! And leaving the lens open to get a long exposer so you can draw with light is always awesome

Erasmus said...

With modern cameras, anyone who can hold it still is a professional photographer as far as I'm concerned.

Anonymous said...

Some great photos there man, good work - I like the little pattern you got going there with the placement.

randomer said...

Not bad at all, just keep taking pictures and they'll get better and better. You have an eye anyway.

Sherman said...

Awesome blog, I followed you.

JH said...

Best tip to an amateur: Do you have a separate flash? As in, not the one attached to camera. If so, never use direct flash on your subject if possible. This creates shadows and it looks fake. If you do have a separate flash then always look for white walls, or your best option a white ceiling. Point the flash to the ceiling to bounce back on your subject. If you learn this simple trick your photos will look very professional and more natural. :)
