A friend of mine recently dug up some old photos of when we built a mini-ramp in my back garden. A mini-ramp is basically a much smaller and shallower version of the vert ramps that you see in competitions. They're great for learning basic tricks, as well as getting used to the transition from flat ground to steep ramp.
3 of us each shelled out £100($162) towards this beauty and it lasted us about 2-3 years. Aged between 12-16 at the time, it was a lot of money and a rather large commitment. We also had to get permission from my dad. He was on holiday at the time, so I rang and asked him if we could build it. He quite happily agreed (he skated in his youth too), but was totally shocked when he came home as he wasn't expecting a ramp as big and as well-made as this.
The 'vertebrae' of the ramp, made from 2x4s. |
After 2 days and spending approximately 24 hours total working on it, all of the woodwork was done. This was great going, but we still needed the metal coping as the icing on the cake.
There was a construction site about a mile up the road where they were building some new flats. I suggested we head up there to see if they could spare us a scaffolding pole. Turns out that they were really nice guys and they gave us a 12ft pole!
We walked into town and took the pole to the nearest Jewsons, which is a building merchant company, to see if we could get the pole cut there. One of the men behind the counter said he'd pop outside and cut it for free! People can be so damn awesome sometimes. He used a diamond-tipped circular saw to slice the scaffold pole in half and we walked home with our two 6ft coping rails!
I then drilled holes in the rails so we could screw them securely into the wood and voila:

Oh man, Mini-Ramp was my never finished project when I was 14. Nostalgia'd hard.
Skateboards were a lot of fun back in the day. It helped me keep fit in school.
That's sick! do you have video?
Nice work with the ramp
nice work man!
that is a nice little mini half-pipe. Wish I still had the balls to do that stuff... I broke my ankle & just quit though...
I would construct my own too, but lack of time unfortunately :(
Pretty cool! Hard to make?
These pictures with your story really cut through my heart in nostalgia too... I remember how cloudy the skies could become when I was that age. Just thinking back at it makes me glad to have been young.
Very cool ramp, really brings back memories.
Wish I'd learned to skate before going snowboarding with some friends a while back. It would've saved me from a lot of falls
Nice, that's some amazing crafting there
pretty cool ramp
Thanks for sharing!
I love watching this vicariously.
Looks great fun.

Sweet ramp dude! I remember when me and my friends used to do stuff like this :)
good job for being 12, lol
That's pretty sick. I remember the day I wanted to build one of those in my back yard. It never happened, and skateboarding faded out of my life ;(
That's a sweet mini half pipe! I made several ramps with my friends when I was little, but it was just a piece of wood with a brick under it lol
For a homemade ramp, looks really good!
I'm amazed that you guys actually built the ramp... I was so lazy in my teens...
whoa good job on this
nostalgia is one of the most bittersweet feelings in the world
Lol, I read this whole deal, and my favorite part was the last sentence (in a good way) lol

Looks sturdy. I want to try building something!
Awesome mini! I built one at my parents house back in like 2001 when I lived there. 6ft high walls and about 12' long by 16'wide.awesome. Yours looks like it would be hella fun to skate. What did you use for the surface? real Skatelite is super expensive so I had some masonite which was really slick. anyway, that thing looks sick!
amazing!!! im totally inspired right noww
DAT RAMP!
That's pretty impressive for a few 12-16 year olds.
A friend of mine is dying to make one of these!

Sick ramp dude! I made one way back in the day, but it wasn't as nice as that one.
